OPTOGLOBE is seeking exceptional, experienced, and globally minded student leaders to serve on its Board of Directors and Board of Editors. This is a one-year volunteer leadership opportunity to shape the future of the global optometry student community across 52 countries.

Before you begin, please read this brief carefully. The application is comprehensive and is designed to identify strong, proven leaders. Preparing in advance will help you submit your strongest application.

Estimated Time to Complete

60 to 90 minutes, assuming you have prepared all required documents and reflected on your responses in advance. Please do not rush — your application is your first impression with the OPTOGLOBE Leadership Committee.

Eligibility

You must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are currently enrolled as an optometry student at a recognised institution
  • You are NOT in your final year of study at the time of graduation
  • You can commit to a full one-year leadership term
  • You have demonstrable leadership or student engagement experience
  • You can submit a Letter of Reference from one of the approved sources below

Applications that do not meet all of these requirements will not be reviewed.

What You Will Be Asked For

The application has 9 sections:

  1. Personal Information — basic contact details and country
  2. Academic Background — institution, year of study, association affiliation
  3. Board & Position Selection — Board of Directors or Board of Editors, and your chosen role
  4. Leadership Experience — your leadership history, achievements, skills, and languages
  5. Motivation & Vision — four essay questions on why you are applying and your vision for OPTOGLOBE
  6. Availability & Commitment — your weekly hours, term commitment, and time zone
  7. CV & Supporting Documents — CV and Letter of Reference
  8. Declarations & Consent — five mandatory declarations
  9. Final Statement — your closing personal statement

Documents You Must Prepare

Prepare both documents in advance and upload to Google Drive with sharing set to “Anyone with the link can view.”

Curriculum Vitae (CV) — Required

PDF format, maximum 3 pages, including:

  • Full name and contact details
  • Current institution and year of study
  • Academic background and notable achievements
  • Leadership and professional experience
  • Skills and competencies
  • Publications, presentations, conferences, or research
  • At least one professional or academic referee

Letter of Reference — Required

ONE letter from any of the following:

  • A university lecturer or academic supervisor
  • The president of your optometry student association
  • Your OPTOGLOBE Liaison Officer (if your association is a registered OPTOGLOBE member)

The letter must be on official letterhead (where applicable), addressed to the OPTOGLOBE Leadership Committee, speak specifically to your leadership capability for the role, and be signed by the referee.

Essay Questions to Prepare

We strongly recommend drafting your responses in a separate document first, then pasting them into the form. The key questions are:

  • Why are you applying for this specific position? (250 words)
  • List of leadership roles you have held (400 words)
  • Your most significant leadership achievement (250 words)
  • Your international or cross-cultural experience (200 words)
  • Your experience with OPTOGLOBE or global eye health initiatives (200 words)
  • Your key skills and competencies (250 words)
  • Why do you want to serve on the OPTOGLOBE Leadership Board? (350 words)
  • Your vision for OPTOGLOBE in the next 12–24 months (300 words)
  • What does it mean to be part of a global student community? (250 words)
  • A time you led through difficulty or navigated team conflict (250 words)
  • Personal statement — why should OPTOGLOBE select you? (300 words)

A Note on Quality

OPTOGLOBE is looking for strong, proven, and globally minded leaders. The Leadership Committee will be reviewing applications from across 52 countries. Generic, rushed, or vague responses will not be competitive. Be specific. Use concrete examples. Reflect genuinely.

What Happens Next

  1. Applications are reviewed by the OPTOGLOBE Founder and Leadership Committee
  2. Shortlisted candidates are contacted for interviews
  3. Final selections are announced and onboarded
  4. New leaders begin their one-year term
