NOSA Launches “Vision For Schools” Initiative in Nigeria, Partners OPTOGLOBE

February 6, 2026. Benin City, Nigeria

The Nigerian Optometric Students Association (NOSA) on February 6, 2026, launched its Vision For Schools Initiative at Baptist High School in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, in a move aimed at improving eye health awareness and inspiring interest in optometry among young students.

The initiative was officially launched by NOSA National President, Nicholas Oke, and is designed to address vision problems among school children through early detection and intervention, while also promoting optometry as a meaningful and impactful career path.

As part of the launch, students and teachers at the school underwent vision screening, and an eye health education session was delivered during the morning assembly. The session focused on helping participants understand the importance of maintaining good eye health and seeking regular eye examinations.

Speaking at the event, Oke emphasised the importance of bringing eye care services directly to schools, noting that many vision problems in children often go undetected, which can negatively affect their learning and overall well-being.

The Vision For Schools Initiative focuses on two main areas: providing vision screening for students and school staff, and introducing students to optometry as a career option.

OPTOGLOBE, the global optometry student community, partnered with NOSA to support the initiative. Representatives of the organisation at the launch included its Founder, Pemije Gadimoh; Director of Membership and Engagement, Abasiofon Ita; and Director of Advocacy and Public Engagement, Adeboye Adetona.

Together with NOSA members, the team conducted vision screenings and engaged students in interactive discussions on eye health, reinforcing the importance of early detection and preventive care.

The initiative has been described as a timely intervention that helps bridge the gap between eye care services and school communities, particularly in areas where access to routine eye examinations may be limited.

The launch of Vision For Schools highlights NOSA’s commitment to community engagement, health education, and advocacy. With the support of OPTOGLOBE, the programme also reflects the growing role of global student collaboration in addressing eye health challenges.

Observers note that initiatives like this can contribute to the early diagnosis of vision problems and inspire the next generation of eye care professionals, ultimately strengthening eye health systems in communities around the world.

The launch of Vision For Schools demonstrates NOSA’s leadership in community engagement, education, and advocacy. With support from OPTOGLOBE, the initiative not only provides practical eye care but also inspires students to consider careers that make a real difference in people’s lives.

Through this program, NOSA is proving that early awareness, timely intervention, and education can transform communities—one school at a time.
